Course Overview

Course Name

Precision Rifle 201 — Intermediate Practical Rifle

Course Code

PR201

Target Student

Shooters who understand rifle setup, zeroing, and basic ballistic engagement. Newer competitors, hunters, and professional users ready to leave the bipod and learn positions and wind.

Course Goal

Move the student off the bipod and into practical field shooting. Build competence in alternate positions, rapid and stable position building, recoil management from props, rear bag use, basic stage planning, and a working wind-reading method using terrain, mirage, vegetation, and trace.

Learning Objectives

On completion the student will be able to:

  • Build a stable, repeatable position from tripod, barricade, rooftop, tank trap, cattle gate, and supported/modified prone in a set time.
  • Use a rear bag and support bag to stabilize the rifle in each position.
  • Establish natural point of aim from any alternate position.
  • Manage recoil from props well enough to spot their own impacts.
  • Read wind by terrain, mirage, vegetation, and bullet trace.
  • Make full-value, half-value, and bracketed wind calls and convert them to holds.
  • Apply and correct a wind hold after a spotted miss.
  • Plan and shoot a simple multi-position stage under a time limit.
  • Communicate clearly as both shooter and spotter.

2. Gear

Required Gear

  • Precision rifle and scope with confirmed zero and trued dope (as in PR101).
  • Tripod capable of supporting the rifle, with a clamp, ball head, or saddle.
  • Rear bag and at least one support/barricade bag (e.g., medium game-changer-style bag).
  • Bipod.
  • 150–250 rounds of consistent match ammunition.
  • Eye and ear protection; kneepads strongly advised.
  • Ballistic solver/app and a current dope card.
  • Sling or rifle support aid the student normally uses.

Recommended Gear

  • Kestrel or handheld wind meter.
  • Spotting scope and binoculars for spotter rotations.
  • Second support bag of a different fill/shape.
  • Arca rail or tripod clamp adapter on the rifle.
  • Shot timer (phone app is fine).
  • Notebook for stage plans and wind logs.
  • Gloves and weather layers for prop work.

3. Estimated Round Count

Plan for 120–160 rounds for the day. Positional work and timed stages drive volume up versus PR101.
