Who should take the Basic Pistol Shooting Course: 

  • Individuals who have already completed the required 16+2 hour NY Pistol Permit Class (PRE-REQUISITE)
  • Beginners with limited experience in using a handgun for self-defense or recreational shooting
  • People wanting to refresh their shooting skills or learn proper firearm safety
  • Anyone wanting to carry concealed, draw and fire from a holster, develop tactical and defensive movements, or learn any other advanced pistol handling skills, for which this course is a pre-requisite

Key aspects of the Basic Pistol Course include: 

  • Safety Instruction: Emphasizing the NRA's core gun safety rules and proper handling practices. 
  • A Comprehensive Review of:
    • Pistol Mechanics: Understanding the different parts of a pistol, how to load and unload, and basic malfunction clearing. 
    • Ammunition Knowledge: Selecting the appropriate ammunition for your pistol 
    • Shooting Positions: Practicing different shooting positions like standing, kneeling, and sitting
    • Shooting Fundamentals: Proper grip, stance, sight alignment, trigger control, and follow-through. 
  • Live Fire Training: Guided range time to practice shooting skills with at least 250 rounds of live ammunition fired under instructor supervision

 

The Basic Pistol Course, also known as "NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting," is a foundational firearms training course designed for individuals who have already completed a New York State-mandated 16+2 Pistol Permit Course offered at Sugarbush Armory by either Defensive Response Training Solutions (DRTS) or She-Fire Training.  This course is available to all individuals regardless of their level of shooting experience, and regardless as to whether they already have a pistol permit or not.  Firearm ownership is also not a requirement.  This course builds upon the basics covered in the NY 16+2 class by integrating significant live shooting drills and range time with a comprehensive review of essential gun safety rules, proper operation of different pistol types, ammunition knowledge, shooting fundamentals, shooting positions, and pistol maintenance.  The goal of this course is mastery of basic pistol knowledge and handling skills with a minimum of 250-rounds of live-fire practice under the supervision of a NRA-certified instructors.  Participants will be able to safely handle and accurately operate a pistol upon completion of this course.

 

What is included?

Participants of the Basic Pistol Course will enjoy up to 3 hours of range time with a minimum of 250 rounds fired, receive the NRA Guide: Basics of Pistol Shooting (a 202-page color publication), the NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program guide, a wallet-sized NRA: Basic Pistol Certification card, and an official NRA: Basic Pistol Certificate. 

 

What to bring:

  • Copy of DRTS or She-Fire NYS Pistol Permit Class Certificate
  • Eye & Ear Protection
  • Propper clothing and footwear for range environment
  • Pistol (If you own one, MUST be a semi-automatic pistol-caliber handgun)
  • 250 rounds of ammunition for your pistol, all in factory containers/boxes (NO reloads!)
