The NRA Defensive Pistol Module will introduce the student into the art of handling a personal defensive caliber handgun, .380 or 9 mm and above semi-automatic or revolver, through classroom and live fire exercises. The student will learn the proper way to present from a holster, use magazines or speed loaders from belt pouches to reload and to shoot accurately at various distances from a variety of positions. Also, student will learn how to safely present from a holster which is covered by a garment for concealment. This is a basic level course that will prepare the student to carry firearms in public who have achieved the required pre-requisites. Please download and review the requirements. Student’s that do not bring the required equipment will be asked to reschedule their class.

You must have completed an NRA Basic Pistol Course and have an Alaska Concealed Handgun Permit or their equivalents and must be able to legally own a firearm. Call if you need clarification of course equivalents, such as Front Sight, Thunder Ranch or Gunsight courses.
You are expected to be familiar with the operation of your chosen firearm.
The items below are required for each student. NO SHARING will be allowed.
You must have a pistol or revolver in good working order that is chambered in .38 or 9 mm and above that can be concealed in a belt mounted holster with a light cover garment. NO pocket pistols or snub-nosed revolvers are allowed. Barrels of three to five inch in length only. No .44 Magnum or above allowed.
1. A dominant side belt mounted holster that is designed to retain that handgun and covers the trigger. See the holsters allowed for use at IDPA.com and go to the rulebook for the equipment allowed. No floppy leather or nylon holsters with retention straps will be allowed nor can you use a police or military style drop holster. You must be able to conceal the holstered handgun with a light garment. Comp-Tac and Blackhawk are two good holster and mag pouch brands.
2. A strong and stiff gun belt that will hold the loaded firearm and magazine pouches to your side. Males must have the belt in the belt loops and ladies may put the belt tight on the hips.
3. At least three loading devices for your firearm. Magazines for semi-automatics and speed loaders or full moon clips for revolvers.
4. You must have electronically amplified hearing protection, both for protection and to hear instructions clearly. You must also have eye protection. Normal vision glasses with polycarbonate lenses are allowed but you might need over-the-glasses protection in addition.
5. At least eight inert training cartridges, also known as dummy rounds. Two brands are A-Z00M and Steelworx. Amazon has them in stock. Local gun stores may also carry them.
6. A cover garment such as a vest, flannel shirt, or jacket.
7. At least 250 rounds of FACTORY target ammunition. No bi-metal ammo allowed, such as Tula or Brownbear from the former Soviet countries.
MVS requires all firearms to be in a case, holster, or gun bag prior to entering the range. Firearms may be handled only under the control of a Range Safety Officer/Instructor.
You will be given time to unload your defensive rounds prior to class starting.
Guns will be inspected by a range RSO for safety and proper maintenance.
Do not allow your muzzle to cover anything you do not want to destroy. At any time. The muzzle must always be pointed downrange at the backstop.
Do not pick up anything with your gun in your hand. Holster first. On the firing line, wait for the command to retrieve your gear.
Do not allow your muzzle to break the 170-degree rule.
This is an instructor level Class. You must have taken and passed the NRA Basic Pistol Class.
There is a gun handling and shooting prequalification for this class. The prequalification must be done without any rehearsal at the time of the prequalification. The firearms you are expected to qualify with single action revolver, double action revolver, and a semi-automatic.
The Friday session is the NRA Basic Instructor Training class and is mandatory.
The Saturday session is the NRA Basic Pistol Instructor. Both sessions must be completed with a passing score of 90% or better.

The NRA Basics of Rifle is intended for all individuals regardless of previous shooting experience or NRA-affiliation. This class is the traditional, instructor-led course where you will receive direct instruction from an NRA-certified instructor from beginning to end.
Instructor Led Only Training: The Instructor Led Only takes place in a traditional classroom and range environment. This course may be completed in a single day format or over several days with smaller blocks of instruction. Course topics include: gun safety rules, proper operation of the different rifle action types, ammunition knowledge and selection, rifle selection and storage, shooting fundamentals, rifle inspection and maintenance, marksmanship, and shooting range safety. Additionally, students will complete live fire training and a nationally standardized shooting qualification while on the range with an NRA Certified Instructor. Students will receive the NRA Guide: Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, take a Basics of Pistol Shooting Student Examination and receive a course completion certificate bearing the signature of the NRA Secretary and your NRA Certified Instructor.
Cost is $85 and Pre-Payment is required.The discount for students 15 years and younger applies when accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Junior students between the ages of eight and fifteen attending a class with a parent or guardian who is also enrolled in the class will now only be charged 50% of the adult class fee. If the attending parent or guardian chooses to just audit the class, the student will pay full price. Junior students who are determined by the lead instructor to be too immature to take the class will have their fees refunded and will be asked to return at a later date.
