This approved course, for first-time Concealed Carry Permit Applicants, is taught by guest instructor Mike Pickens, a certified instructor in the State of California. In addition to classroom time and a written test, a shooting qualification will be administered. Full attendance and passing test scores will be required to receive your Certificate of Qualification.
This course is not intended for beginners. Students must be proficient with their handgun and will be required to demonstrate safe handgun handling. Intro to Handgun, for new shooters, is highly recommended.
*** PLEASE NOTE***
- Applicants will need to attest that they intend to spend time during the subsequent 12 months in the issuing county.
- Non-Resident California applicants are required to be a member of a plaintiff organization in the lawsuit CRPA v. LASO (details below)
- Successful completion of this course DOES NOT GUARANTEE issuance of a concealed carry permit. That will be determined by the sheriff of the county you apply to.
- Permit application is limited to the specifc firearm used during the qualification shoot (Make, Model and Serial number will be listed on the certificate of Qualification).
Course topics:
- Shooting Proficiency, Reload, Malfunction, Safe Handling Drills
- Skills Assessment
- Shooting Qualification for each handgun.
- California firearms laws
Please bring:
- Qualifying handgun (must be commercially manufactured.)
- 2 Magazines for the qualification shoot.
- 50 rounds of factory ammunition (Available for purchase) (Covers at least 1 firearm for most counties)
- Holster (IWB or OWB. Strong Side only)
- Hearing Protection (Available for rent)
- Eye protection (Available for purchase)
- Appropriate Attire (Belt and closed toe shoes required, hat with brim recommended)
- Lunch, snacks, drinks (Optional)
- Note taking material (Optional)

- A Certificate of Qualification does not guarantee the issuance of a CCW, which will be determined by the issuing California agency.
- CA CCW holders may only carry the handgun(s) they qualify with. Qualified handguns are recorded by Make, Model, Caliber and Serial Number.
- CCW permit is good for 2 years.
- Non residents can present a valid out of state ID at time of application.
- A student who fails the shooting qualification will need to re-take the full class.
- Add-A-Gun ($25 per additional firearm). Number of firearms allowed varies by county)
- Plaintiff organizations for Non-Resident California applicants. (Active membership required prior to submission to Sheriff's office)
- Handgun rental is not available for this class
- This class does not qualify for membership discounts
Shooting Qualifications:
Lassen County: Qualifying score is 80% within the 8 ring on a B27 Target.
From a holster, scan and re-holster
- 3 yds 5 rounds
